| Description | Providers need to monitor and understand the operational efficiency of inpatient care facilities. This includes key metrics such as the number of admissions and the type of these admissions as well as length of stay and the overall utilization of beds in the facility. A high utilization rate suggests a efficiently managed inpatient facility but, if very high, it may also indicate a potential problem whereby the facility has no free capacity to deal with unplanned admissions such as those that may come though the emergency department. The analysis includes a measure relating to outpatient surgeries that may appear out of place but it is a useful metric for the hospital management team when considering if some of the surgical inpatient workload could be more efficiently performed using outpatient surgical care. |
